How to use: Texture roller
A roller is the fastest way to cover a clay slab with continuous texture — for mugs, tags, tiles and jewellery. The pattern is wrapped around the circumference, so it repeats without a visible seam as long as you roll in one steady, even movement.

Prepare the clay slab
Roll the clay to an even thickness, at least 5-6 mm. On a thinner slab the roller stretches the clay and the pattern comes out uneven at the edges.

Set the moisture
The clay should be plastic but not sticky. A freshly rolled, briefly aired slab gives the cleanest pattern.

Prevent sticking
Wipe the roller with a damp sponge or lightly dust the slab with ceramic talc. Repeat every few passes, as clay gradually builds up in the pattern.

Make the first pass
Set the roller at the edge of the slab and run it to the end in one movement, pressing evenly. Do not stop halfway — every stop leaves a deeper mark.

Following passes
Run the next passes side by side, edges touching. If the pattern is meant to align, start each pass at the same point of the roller rotation.

Trim the borders
The slab edges always stretch more. After texturing, trim a few millimetres off each side or cut your pieces from the middle of the slab.

Form straight away
A textured slab is best formed right after rolling, while the clay is still plastic. When rolling a mug, score and slip the joints thoroughly.

Cleaning
Wash the roller in lukewarm water with a soft brush right after use and dry at room temperature. Dried clay in the pattern makes the texture shallow.
Frequently asked questions
- The pattern is uneven — deeper in places
- Uneven pressure or stopping the roller. Run it in one smooth movement, pressing evenly with both hands.
- Clay sticks to the roller
- The slab is too wet. Wait a dozen minutes, wipe the roller with a damp sponge and dust the clay with ceramic talc.
- I can see a seam between passes
- Run each pass exactly next to the previous one, without overlapping, and start the rotation at the same point of the pattern.
- The slab stretches while rolling
- Too much pressure or clay that is too soft. Ease off and roll on canvas, which holds the clay in place.
- How deep should the texture be?
- 1-2 mm is plenty. A deeper pattern is harder to glaze evenly and traps dirt.
- How do I wash the tool?
- Lukewarm water with a soft brush. No dishwasher and no hot water — the print can deform.
