How to use: Texture stamps
A stamp is a tool for pressing a pattern, mark or texture into a clay slab — on mugs, tags, pendants and tiles. The whole design transfers in a single press, so the quality of the impression comes down to clay moisture and even pressure. Here is the proven routine.

Unpack and wash the print
Remove any filament strings, check the pattern against the light and wash the stamp in lukewarm soapy water. A fresh print can carry printing residue that would show in the first impression.

Prepare the clay slab
Roll the clay to an even thickness, at least 5-6 mm. A thinner slab bulges under the stamp and cracks on the other side. Smooth the surface with a rib.

Wait for the right moisture
The crispest impression comes from leather-soft clay: it does not stick to your finger but still gives easily under pressure. Clay that is too wet stays in the pattern, clay that is too dry crumbles at the edges.

Prevent sticking
Before each impression wipe the stamp with a damp sponge or dust the clay with a pinch of ceramic talc or corn flour. It is the simplest way to a clean pattern.

Press the pattern
Put felt or a piece of sponge under the slab, hold the stamp perpendicular and press in one confident move, 1-2 mm deep. Do not rock the tool — rocking blurs the edges of the design.

Lift the stamp
Lift the tool straight up, without twisting. If the clay pulls with the pattern, wait a few minutes and try again on a slightly drier slab.

Finish the impression
Remove edge burrs with a damp brush. To highlight the pattern with colour, rub underglaze or slip into the recesses after the bisque firing and wipe off the excess with a damp sponge.

Cleaning and storage
Wash the stamp straight after use in lukewarm water with a soft brush — dried clay in fine grooves is very hard to remove. Dry at room temperature.
Frequently asked questions
- The impression is shallow and unclear
- Too little pressure or clay that is too dry. Press harder with your whole palm on a soft surface, and check the slab has not dried out too much.
- Clay stays in the recesses of the pattern
- The slab is too wet. Wait a dozen minutes, wipe the stamp with a damp sponge and dust the clay with ceramic talc.
- The slab bulges around the impression
- Normal with a thin slab. Use clay at least 5-6 mm thick and even the surface afterwards with a gentle pass of a rib.
- Is the pattern mirrored?
- Yes, the design on the stamp is mirrored so the impression in the clay reads the right way round.
- How do I wash the tool?
- Lukewarm water with a soft brush, right after use. No dishwasher and no hot water — the print can deform.
- Is the print safe for functional ware?
- Yes. The tool only touches raw clay, which is then fired and glazed.
