Cat Clay Cutter

Cut a perfect cat face from a slab of clay.

About this design

This physical cutter allows you to shape a slab of clay into a precise cat face silhouette. You will achieve a repeatable, distinct vessel contour that serves as a solid base for further ceramic work at your table and in the studio.

What you will use it for

  • You roll out your prepared clay slab to an even thickness, then apply the tool and press it down evenly to cut out the desired shape with cutter dimensions of 81 by 78 millimeters. You receive a clean edge ready for drying and firing.

How to use it

A cutter is a tool for cutting repeatable shapes out of a clay slab — blanks for mugs and cups, or decorative figures. The cutting edge is thin and sharp, so it works fast but calls for a few simple habits. Here is the proven routine.

  1. Prepare the clay slab

Roll the clay to an even thickness, ideally between guide rails (typically 4-6 mm). An uneven slab gives a crooked cut and cracking edges.

  2. Wait for the right moisture

The clay should be plastic but not sticky. Too wet and it clings to the cutter wall, too dry and it crumbles at the edge. Airing the slab briefly under plastic is usually enough.

  3. Prevent sticking

Roll the slab on canvas and, before cutting, wipe the cutter with a damp sponge or dust the clay surface with a pinch of ceramic talc.

  4. Cut the shape

Set the cutter perpendicular to the slab and press evenly with your whole palm until the blade goes all the way through. Do not twist the tool — twisting stretches and ripples the edge.

  5. Push the piece out

Lift the cutter together with the clay and push the shape out from the back with a finger or thumb, laying it straight onto a board. Do not pull the clay by its rim, it will distort.

  6. Smooth the edges

Wipe the rim with a damp sponge or finger to remove burrs. This is also the moment to slightly round the edge, which reduces chipping after firing.

  7. Impressions and forming

If the tool carries a pattern or a ruler, press it in gently before you form the piece. When rolling a mug, score and slip the joints thoroughly.

  8. Drying and cleaning the tool

Dry the cut pieces slowly, covered with plastic, so they do not crack. Wash the cutter immediately in lukewarm water — dried clay inside the cutting wall is hard to remove and dulls the edge.
